Camaraderie with a Purpose

The Society was founded in 1835 by a group of prominent New York City gentlemen, including Washington Irving, as a membership organization dedicated to preserving knowledge of the history and customs of New York City’s Dutch forebears.

Since 1937, awarded  for outstanding ability and service to the City of New York.

Since 1985, awarded to a writer who epitomizes the standards set by the founders of the Society
